Carlton County 4-H member, Joni GT participated in Ignite by 4-H, a four day experience in Washington, D.C., where teens in eighth grade and older had the opportunity explore the areas of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), agriscience, healthy living, career readiness and emotional well-being, connect with young people from across the U.S. and learn ways to be change agents on issues youth face around the world.
Joni was part of a team of three youth that were selected to present their “Let’s Talk About Gender Identity” curriculum as part of the healthy living track. During the summit, members of the group attended workshops led by their 4-H peers from across the U.S. on a variety of topics including mental health, diversity in STEM programs and messages from the Surgeon General and an arctic explorer.
“The team did an outstanding job presenting their work and connecting with 4-H members from other states who want to replicate their program,” said Joe Rand, interim director of Extension diversity, equity and inclusion programs and Extension educator.
In-person LQA&E training
Carlton County 4-H is offering an in-person Livestock Quality Assurance & Ethics (LQA&E) training on Saturday, April 29th (note: new date) from 9am to 12 Noon. This event is free for youth in Carlton County. Youth outside of Carlton County are welcome, but must pay a $5 fee.
LQA&E training MUST be current for youth (grades 6 to 13) before August 11th to be eligible to accept a Minnesota 4-H State Fair Livestock trip or Northeast Livestock Show trip. All youth showing livestock in grades 3-13 are encouraged to take LQA&E training every three years, even if a state show isn’t one of their goals. In-person certification is good for three fair seasons, so training must be taken every three years. There are new lessons covered each year.
